Georgia Bulldogs Coach Mark Richt Leads SEC Coaches in Week 1...

Published Sep 6, 2007

ATLANTA, GA--As we close out the opening week of SEC football, there were a couple of surprises. With all the pre-season hype, there were big expectations for Week One. Football head coaches are kind of like a blue chip stock, they go up and down, based on their reactions to adversity and an ever changing market.

Here's how we rate the coaches stock after Week One.

1) Our top billing goes to Georgia Coach Mark Richt. The Bulldogs beat the street and exceeded expectations. The Bulldogs dominated Oklahoma State in their opener 35-14. Coach Richt played well with a re-built defense and offensive line. Quarterback Matt Stafford shined, the wide receivers stepped up and Georgia fans are optimistic about the season. Georgia plays South Carolina Saturday in Athens.

2) Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators are next on the list. The Tim Tebow era has begun and it looks like an exciting time to be a Gator. Florida continues to play with a lot of confidence and intensity. Quarterback Tebow passed for over 300 yards in his debut with three touchdowns. Florida looks like a team on a mission as they romped Western Kentucky 49-3. Next up Troy in Gainesville.

3) Les Miles comes in the #3 position. We expected LSU to do well so they matched expectations. LSU played great in their opener but Mississippi State looked awful too. LSU showed glimpses of greatness and this team will be dangerous to opponents by mid-season. LSU plays ACC opponent Virginia Tech Saturday in Baton Rouge.

4) Nick Saban brought the Crimson Tide fans to their feet with a 52-6 beating of Western Carolina. Saban has had a lot of work to do with Alabama getting the team ready to compete; Saban proved Saturday that he was a good investment. Alabama travels to Vandy this week where Bama is a three point favorite.

5) Rich Brooks and the Kentucky Wildcats took it to Eastern Kentucky 50-10. Andre Woodson threw a bomb on the first play and put the Wildcats on the board. Now, that's exciting football. Kentucky plays Kent State in Lexington on Saturday.

6) Bobby Johnson and the Vanderbilt Commodores beat Richmond 41-17. A win is a win and every win for Vandy is an accomplishment. Vandy welcomes Alabama on Saturday.

7) Ed Orgeron pulled off a win on the road at Memphis 23-21. Ole Miss needed a win. The Rebels host Missouri in Oxford Saturday.

8) Houston Nutt and his Arkansas Razorbacks were irritated with a half time score of 23-17. The Razorbacks did not complete a pass in the second half until midway through the third quarter. Not exactly the peak performance Nutt wanted. The Razorbacks have the week off before they play Alabama on September 15.

9) Tommy Tuberville is scratching his head. Auburn had to score late in the game to beat Kansas State 23-13. The Auburn offensive line has serious concerns. Auburn plays USF on Saturday.

10) Steve Spurrier has been upset with his team all week. The Gamecocks had a difficult time beating the Lousiana-Lafayette Rajun Cajuns 28-14. Spurrier has made a number of changes on both sides of the ball going into the game with Georgia. The Bulldogs are 6 point favorites.

11) Phillip Fulmer did not get the season opener result he wanted. The Vols walked into a revenge game from Cal State. Cal took it to Tennessee 45-31. More pressure for Fulmer.

12) Sylvester Croom had the most disappointing week of all. Going into his fourth season, Croom has been talking like his Bulldogs were revamped and ready to play. MSU quarterback Michael Henig had a night mare evening with six interceptions. Croom had few options and looked disoriented. Mississippi State travels to Tulane.
