How 38 Horses at the Swan Center Changed my Life

Riding horses was not a favorite sport of mine. In fact, as a teenager, I experienced a very unpleasant out of control horseback ride. From that point on I made the decision never to ride again. And I didn't until 19 years ago when I was introduced to the Swan Center Outreach located one hour north of Atlanta, nestled in the foothills of the North GA mountains. The Swan Center Outreach is a nonprofit organization serving as sanctuary and a rehabilitation center for abused and neglected animals. For the past 19 years, I have volunteered. By better understanding the nature of horses and witnessing the kind of care they experience at the Swan Center, I have come to know myself. The 38 horses that reside at the Swan Center have been my teachers, healers and friends. It seemed that I was the one who was giving care to them, but it was they who taught me how to be aware, kinder, compassionate, patient and sensitive. At times of great sadness, they mended my heart. When I needed an ear, they always listened. They gave me confidence when I was unsure. In essence, they have helped me become a better "human."

In addition to the volunteer program, the Swan Center offers children's horse camps; guided trail rides; therapeutic riding; corporate and youth leadership training; petting zoo and pony rides. Private children's birthday parties are fun and available. Children and parents alike can participate in the FREE Saturday saddle club.

For those city slickers who want the "dude ranch" thing, Cowgirl and Cowboy Getaways are a treat! Health retreats can also be furnished.

Join us for JINGLE BELLS ON HORSEBACK....from Thanksgiving through New Years 2005. The horses are adorned with deer antlers and jingle with bells on their saddles. A one hour guided trail ride includes a 20 minute mini lesson. Helmets are required and are provided. Hot cocoa will be served! Fun for the entire family.

The Fireside Cafe' in the Foothills Shopping Plaza in Marble Hill will be hosting a Dessert Tasting Fundraiser on December 1st. Incredible gourmet cheesecakes, German chocolate cakes, lemon meringue, pecan and key lime pies to satisfy the taste buds. The house special blend of fine coffees, herbed teas and soft drinks are on the menu. Call 770-893-6059 for ticket purchases and details.

The ultimate goal of the Swan Center Outreach is to affect individuals in a positive way by sharing with them the therapeutic, educational and spiritual value of a loving relationship with animals. And in the process to assist them in developing life skills and attitudes that will enhance their potential as a contributing member of society. The immediate focus is to make more people aware of what they have to offer, and to raise funds, so that they may increase their capacity to greater serve the community.

So, for those of you who want to make a difference in your own life or the life of a horse or both, come visit the Swan Center Outreach. Happy trails!
