Falcons Signing Delayed

Cornerback Jimmy Williams, the Falcons' top draft pick last April, won't sign until Monday at the earliest. Williams severed his contract with his current representation in a legal maneuver that triggers a five-day moratorium before he can hire another agent.

Williams plans to re-sign with Lock, Metz and Malinovic on Monday, a representative with the agency said Wednesday. Williams also said he plans to stick with the firm.

Williams terminated his contract through the NFLPA on Wednesday because one of the agents listed on the contract — Zeke Sandhu, whom agency employee and former NFL running back Melvin Bratton described as "a runner" — has left the Arizona-based group, and Williams has to sign an entirely new contract minus Sandhu's name. A player must wait five days to formally enlist or re-enlist representation,

according to players' union rules.

None of the Falcons' other four draft picks has signed, but the players' agents said contracts could be consummated by the end of the week and that no deals are likely to be completed by the time players report Wednesday for training camp. Bratton said he does not foresee Williams being unsigned when the team begins to practice July 27.

Practice times set

Falcons training camp begins one week from Thursday, with the initial practice beginning at 2:30 p.m. The team begins twice-daily sessions July 28 at 8:15 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Practices will continue through the preseason opener with alternating once-daily, twice-daily sessions at the same times.
