Sequoyah Boys Make History On Tennis Court

The Chiefs, who blanked Cherokee to earn the No. 3 seed in the consolation round of the 5-AAAA tournament two weeks ago, travels to Dalton to take on Northwest Whitfield today. The Bruins are the region champions from 7-AAAA.

The Sequoyah boys tennis team made school history on April 25 with a 3-2 triumph over Dacula in the opening round of the Class AAAA state tournament.

Keying Sequoyah’s upset at Dacula was No. 3 singles player Derek Daniel.

Daniel dropped the first set 6-1 to Anwar Ferdinand before rallying for a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the final two sets.

No. 1 singles player Tim Murphy defeated Dacula’s Kevin Ramberg 6-4, 6-2.

The Chiefs’ doubles team of Will Richardson and Trey Campbell won their match to extend Sequoyah’s season.

If the Chiefs defeat Northwest Whitfield, they play the winner of Marist and Chapel Hill in the quarterfinals next Tuesday.
