Baby Steps will host a special encore screening of “The Business of Being Born,” a candid and eye-opening documentary produced by Ricki Lake that explores and questions the way American women have babies, on January 12, 2008. The November 1 screening in Marietta brought close to 300 people!
In “The Business of Being Born,” Lake teams up with director Abby Epstein to explore the intricacies of the history of childbirth, insurance issues, malpractice coverage problems, as well as on-going misunderstandings of who a midwife is and what a homebirth entails. The documentary follows Lake’s journey from a hospital birth that did not honor her birth plan to an amazing homebirth. Moviegoers witness short takes from Lake’s labor to her triumph as she reaches to pull her baby from her body.
Through interviews, stories and testimonials, “The Business of Being Born” shows the world the dramatic dichotomy between the medical and midwifery models of care. Shocking facts regarding the historical and current practices of the childbirth industry interweave with stories of couples who decide to give birth on their own terms. The movie premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2007 to wide critical acclaim.
This screening of “The Business of Being Born” will take place at Life University, located at 1296 Barclay Circle, Annex C, Room 127, Marietta, GA 30060 on January 12, 2008 at 5 p.m. Baby Steps will host a discussion session afterwards, with special guest Susan Hodges, president of Citizens for Midwifery.
